Two Guns and a Bow Tie: How Tyson Beckford Became Hip-Hop's Supermodel

There's a version of American fashion history that likes to pretend the runway and the block never crossed paths. Tyson Beckford is the walking, six-foot-two proof that this version is a lie. Before there was a "streetwear era," before luxury houses were tripping over themselves to book rap-adjacent talent, there was a kid from the Bronx with Washington Heights swagger and a Panamanian-Jamaican-Chinese bloodline who got scouted in a park by a hip-hop magazine — and then went on to become the first male supermodel in the history of the industry. Not the first Black male supermodel. The first, period. No man before him had commanded that title, that money, or that cultural weight.

This is his story, and it is inseparable from hip-hop's story.

Discovered in the Park, Not the Boardroom

The origin myth has been told a dozen ways, and Beckford himself has spent years correcting the record. The short version: in the summer of 1992, while he was in Washington Square Park in Manhattan, minding his own business, he was approached by Erik Lauren Counsel, a rep working with The Source — at the time the bible of hip-hop journalism — about appearing in a style feature for the magazine. Beckford has said his first instinct was suspicion. He figured it was a scam, maybe worse. "I'm thinkin', 'Yeah, this is some porno magazine,'" he recalled telling himself, "but everything was legit."

It was legit, and it changed everything. The Source wasn't just some fashion outlet — it was a hip-hop institution, and it introduced Beckford's face to a magazine that had absolutely nothing to do with traditional modeling gatekeepers. There was no Elite Model Management casting call, no European agency scout. A hip-hop publication put him in front of a camera first, and that fact alone should tell you everything about where his roots really are.

By December 1994, that relationship produced one of the most quietly historic ad placements in the culture: a print advertisement for the clothing brand First Down, which ran in The Source. It's a modest artifact by today's standards — a page in a magazine, not a billboard in Times Square — but it captured a young, chiseled Beckford wearing the era's uniform of choice for the hip-hop generation, at a moment when Polo, Nautica, Cross Colours, and First Down were as much a part of the culture's identity as the music itself. That ad is now a nostalgia touchstone, regularly recirculated by 90s hip-hop archivists online, because it marks the exact moment before Beckford became "Tyson" — before Ralph Lauren, before VH1, before the world knew his name.

From The Source to the House of Ralph Lauren

Word travels fast when someone looks like Tyson Beckford. Within roughly a year of his Source appearances, he was recruited by Ralph Lauren to front the company's Polo Sport menswear and fragrance campaigns. In 1995, Ralph Lauren signed him to an exclusive contract reportedly worth hundreds of thousands of dollars — an unheard-of sum for a male model at the time, and it made him the first Black man to become the face of the brand's advertising.

Beckford has never downplayed what that partnership meant. Ralph Lauren himself praised his "all-American look with a dramatic edge," saying Beckford conveyed "power, style and intelligence in a very exciting way." But there's a deeper story underneath the compliment: Beckford brought something to Polo's WASP-y, prep-school aesthetic that it had never had before — a hip-hop sensibility. He didn't sand down his presence to fit the brand; the brand bent, visibly, to accommodate him. That collision is exactly why Lo-heads — the hip-hop subculture of Polo Ralph Lauren obsessives that emerged out of Harlem and Brooklyn in the late '80s and early '90s — embraced Beckford as one of their own. He wasn't just modeling the clothes. He was legitimizing a relationship between hip-hop and high fashion that had, until then, mostly run one direction: the culture wearing the brand, not the brand center-staging the culture.

That partnership with Ralph Lauren has proven to be one of the longest-running relationships in modeling history. Beckford has walked in and out of the Ralph Lauren universe for over thirty years, and as recently as January 2026, at the age of 55, he closed out Ralph Lauren's Fall/Winter menswear show in Milan — full circle, still the face, still setting the tone.

The Video Vixen's Male Counterpart: Beckford on Camera

If the fashion world made Beckford a household name, hip-hop's music video era made him a legend to an entire generation who never picked up a magazine. Long before "video vixen" became shorthand for the women who populated late-'90s rap clips, Beckford was arguably hip-hop's original male video model — the guy directors called when they wanted presence, not just a verse.

His most famous — and most personal — appearance came almost by accident. Beckford has told the story of running into The Notorious B.I.G. while sitting in his Land Cruiser about to smoke a cigarette. The two were friends, and Biggie, on a whim, pulled him into the video for "One More Chance/Stay With Me" — the 1995 remix that became one of the most commercially successful singles of Biggie's career, debuting in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Beckford has called the moment one of his fondest memories, made heavier by the fact that Biggie would be murdered only a couple of years later.

That wasn't a one-off. Beckford went on to appear in Toni Braxton's "Breathe Again" and "Un-Break My Heart," 50 Cent's "21 Questions," Britney Spears' "Toxic," and Mariah Carey's "Infinity," among others — a resume that straddles hip-hop, R&B, and pop in a way that mirrors his own crossover appeal. He's said he did so many videos in the '90s to pay bills while modeling and traveling that he genuinely doesn't remember all of them. That's not humility. That's just what it looked like to be one of the most in-demand faces of the era.

The Record Label That Didn't Make It

Beckford's ambitions never stayed confined to modeling. Trademark filings from Tyson C. Beckford, Inc. show the model registered rights not just for posters and calendars, but for compact discs featuring music and video recordings of musical performances — a clear signal that Beckford, like so many hip-hop-adjacent entrepreneurs of his era, wanted a foothold in the record business, not just in front of the camera. A separate entity, Tyson Records, Inc., was registered for sound recordings, phonograph records, and prerecorded video cassettes featuring music.

The venture never took off the way Beckford envisioned. It's a familiar story in the music industry: a celebrity with real cultural capital and real relationships tries to translate fame into a functioning label, only to run into the unglamorous reality of A&R, distribution, and marketing — the parts of the business that don't care how good you look on a runway. Beckford's label efforts quietly faded rather than exploded, another entry in hip-hop's long list of star-backed labels that generated headlines but not hits. It's a chapter he doesn't dwell on in interviews, but it says something important about him: he never wanted to just be hip-hop's favorite face. He wanted to be inside the business of the culture, building something, even if that particular swing didn't connect.

Real Love for the Culture, Not Just Proximity to It

What separates Beckford from other fashion-world figures who've flirted with hip-hop imagery is that his connection reads as lived-in rather than borrowed. He came up in the era when Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, and Nautica were fashion's answer to sampling — when the culture took mainstream Americana and made it mean something completely different on 125th Street than it meant in a Connecticut country club. Beckford has spoken about how hip-hop connected with Polo through the Lo-life movement, acknowledging that the culture's embrace of the brand he modeled for was organic, grassroots, and, frankly, more important to the brand's mystique than any ad campaign could manufacture.

His friendships with artists weren't transactional appearances arranged by publicists — they were relationships. Biggie pulling him into a video because they knew each other. The late Black Rob, a Bad Boy artist, personally warning him about the pitfalls of doing business with Diddy before Beckford's contentious, ultimately litigated partnership with Sean John — a warning Beckford has said he now understands in hindsight. He's talked candidly about an alleged physical altercation with members of Diddy's camp outside a New York tattoo shop, one that reportedly left him needing six stitches. These aren't the anecdotes of someone who dipped a toe into hip-hop culture for a photo op. They're the scars — literal and otherwise — of someone who lived inside it.

Beckford has also never been shy about staying current, weighing in on beefs, culture-war flashpoints, and industry gossip involving artists from Kanye West to Chris Brown to Drake, cementing his role less as a retired icon and more as an ongoing fixture of hip-hop's ecosystem — the elder statesman who still has opinions and still gets asked for them.

"Two Guns": Firearms, the Range, and an Unapologetic Street Edge

Beckford's image has always carried an edge that separated him from the softer archetype of male modeling. Part of that comes from his own account of his upbringing: he's revealed that his street name growing up was "Two Guns," a nickname tied to an era of his life that reportedly included two shootouts before fashion pulled him onto a different path. It's the kind of detail that would sink most luxury brand ambassadors' careers. For Beckford, it's part of an authenticity that hip-hop has always valued — the sense that the man in the campaign has actually lived something real, not just posed for it.

That edge hasn't dulled with age or fame. Beckford has remained a vocal, unapologetic defender of Second Amendment rights and gun ownership, publicly clashing with celebrities he's viewed as hypocritical on the issue — most notably calling out actor Matt Damon for what Beckford characterized as a two-faced stance on firearms. He's spoken about spending time at the range and treats marksmanship less like a hobby and more like a discipline, consistent with a worldview shaped by growing up in an environment where being able to handle yourself wasn't optional.

Life in the Fast Lane — Literally

Guns aren't Beckford's only high-octane interest. He's a certified gearhead with real credentials to back it up: he became a licensed driving member of Supertuners, a performance and motorsports organization, and even trademarked the "Supertuners" name for racing cars and racing motor cars through his own company, Tyson C. Beckford, Inc. He parlayed that passion into television, hosting an automotive makeover show called "Fine Tuned" on the Discovery Turbo channel, where he indulged his love of high-performance vehicles and customization for an audience well beyond the fashion world.

For a guy whose day job was built on stillness — standing in front of a camera, holding a pose — the appeal of speed, engines, and total control behind the wheel makes a certain kind of sense. It's another way Beckford has resisted being boxed into the role of "pretty face." He wanted range, and racing gave him some.

Chinese Jamaican Roots: The Face Behind the Face

Beckford's look — the cheekbones, the eyes, the bone structure that made photographers like Herb Ritts and Bruce Weber want to shoot him — didn't come from nowhere. He was born in the Bronx to a Jamaican mother, Hillary Dixon Hall, and a Panamanian father, Lloyd Beckford, who was himself of Chinese-Jamaican descent. Shortly after Tyson was born, his mother relocated the family back to Jamaica, where he lived until around age seven before the family moved to the Rochester, New York area. He attended Pittsford Mendon High School, a top-ranked school in an affluent suburb, thanks to a busing program that brought students from the city into wealthier districts — and where, by his own account, he was frequently teased for looking different from everyone around him.

That mixed Chinese-Jamaican-Panamanian heritage is exactly what made him impossible to categorize by the fashion industry's old, narrow racial rulebook — and it's precisely what made him electric to audiences who had never seen a face like his fronting a major American fashion house. In interviews, Beckford has connected the dots between the bullying he endured as a kid for his "exotic" features and the eventual vindication of becoming one of the most photographed men on the planet. The kids who mocked his cheekbones grew up to see them on a Ralph Lauren billboard.

The Beckford Bar, and a Business Mind That Never Rests

Beckford's entrepreneurial streak has produced one particularly memorable consumer product: The Beckford Bar, a portable home workout device marketed as his "secret workout tool" for building the chest, upper body, and core. Built with sliding, independently moving grips designed for push-up-based training, the bar promised gym-level chest and core activation without the gym — a home fitness pitch tailor-made for a man whose physique was, for two decades, the industry standard. The product built a loyal customer base and drew plenty of media attention, some of it more irreverent than flattering (VH1 famously compared its demonstration videos to the Shake Weight), but it also became the subject of a lawsuit when Beckford's manufacturing partner, Cisco, sued him, alleging he hadn't held up his end of a promotional agreement after an initial production run.

Beyond the bar, Beckford has kept building. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, he launched Orion Skye, his own men's fragrance, naming it for his longtime fascination with astronomy and the way the moon and sky "set the mood." He also explored a wine and spirits line through a partnership with the celebrity-focused platform GrapeStars, with early talk of a vodka and even a cognac. On the fashion side, his endorsement resume in the 2020s has included Beyoncé's Ivy Park x Adidas campaign, a Burberry outerwear campaign, and continued high-profile runway work for Ralph Lauren — proof that more than thirty years after a hip-hop magazine editor stopped him in a park, Tyson Beckford is still the guy brands call when they want a face that carries actual cultural weight.

Why He Still Matters

Hip-hop has always rewarded people who feel real, who came up through the culture rather than borrowing its aesthetics from a distance. Tyson Beckford checks that box in a way almost no one else in fashion ever has. He was discovered by a hip-hop magazine. He appeared in a hip-hop classic's most iconic video because the artist was his actual friend. He tried to build a label because he wanted skin in the game, not just a check for showing up. He carries a street name, a shooting range habit, and a documented history that most luxury-brand faces would spend millions trying to bury — and he's never hidden any of it.

That's the whole point. Tyson Beckford didn't become the first male supermodel by leaving hip-hop behind to go mainstream. He brought hip-hop with him, and thirty-plus years later, he's still repping it — cheekbones, guns, cars, and all.
